Sophie Nicol - Former Pupil

Now - French & Spanish Student at the University of Stirling

Current Job/Industry
Currently, I work as an English language assistant in France. I opted for a gap year from my studies in French and Spanish to enhance my language skills before progressing into third year at university. In my role as a language assistant, I either deliver presentations to entire classes alongside the teacher or independently with smaller groups of students.

Academic Skills
During school I acquired many skills that have been beneficial both in my studies and in daily life. Focus and perseverance have been important for overcoming challenges and accomplishing goals that I might have otherwise abandoned at the first hurdle. Transitioning to university was a big lifestyle and academic change as the teaching style was completely different than I was used to in high school. However, I was determined to continue with my studies and figure out the best way for me to learn more independently.

Wider Skills
While attending Larbert High School, I volunteered as a sports coach for Tryst Community Sports Club, which significantly improved my confidence. This role not only provided me with the chance to enhance my coaching abilities but also introduced me to a diverse range of people, allowing me to improve my communication and interpersonal skills. These skills have been key since my departure from school, especially in my current position working abroad in a high school. This role constantly exposes me to new faces, requiring me to continually connect with others. Moreover, living in a different culture while starting a new job has challenged my adaptability, showing me that I can thrive in unfamiliar situations.

What advice would you give your younger self?
The biggest piece of advice I would give to my younger self would be to embrace and say 'yes' to as many opportunities as possible. Even when faced with situations that seem daunting and push you outside your comfort zone, taking the chance is definitely worth it. Through these experiences, you not only gain valuable lessons but also discover more about yourself!
