Cameron Wright - Former Pupil

Now - Digital Communications Lead for Beyond the Ultimate

Current Job/Industry
- Currently working as the Digital Communications Lead for Beyond the Ultimate, taking charge of photographing, filming and marketing ultramarathon runners in races around the world. Before that I worked for Scottish Student Sport as a communications officer, and before that I was a university student studying media and communications. While I was a student I worked with Tryst Community Sports Club and as a social media intern at Scottish Cycling.

Academic Skills
I left school having put a great amount of focus on my grades in order to get into a law course.
Studying law for the last two years has been extremely challenging academically but has pushed me to widen my mind and learn more independently whilst studying areas that I find challenging.

Wider Skills
English and Media are my main skills as reading information, writing articles, understanding camera techniques are really important. Most of my job revolves around storytelling and communicating how the races unfold to fans and potential runners. I also have to have a strong understanding of health and fitness and to be fit myself, so PE was a key skill.

I also frequently use my geography and history skills to learn and understand more about the areas the races are taking place and how we might be able to communicate that to attract new participants and engage fans. I also use my creative skills developed within graphic communication and art and design every single day to help create graphics, animations, posters and branding.

What advice would you give your younger self?
In school and out with I developed lots of different skills that have set me apart and allowed me to do my job. These include good communication skills from playing and coaching sport. Confidence and speaking from doing presentations. Creative skills from painting and drawing. If I could give advice to my younger self I'd say to stick in at school, but don't forget how important it is to have other hobbies and interests, they all help benefit your future career!
